While the importance of the coordination relief and development efforts is well understood and much appreciated, having effective coordination is not easily attained and remains elusive in many relief and development contexts. Lack of effective coordination or weak coordination results most times in friction between would be partners, leading to loss of energy and decreased efficiency. Effective coordination is determined by many factors ranging from the legal and policy framework, power relations among the partners to institutional and personal interests of the partners involved. This study assess the coordination of relief and development efforts among NGOs and between NGOs and Kammengo local government, in Mpigi District in central Uganda. It provides recommendations for effective coordination of relief and local development efforts.

Dr Richard Ofwono is humanitarian relief and development manager with over 25 years experience managing relief and development Programmes in conflict, post- conflict and non-conflict contexts in East and West Africa. He holds Master of Arts in Development studies degree and Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Makerere University.
