Friedrich A. Hayek, geb. 1899, gest. 1992, absolvierte ein Studium der Rechtswissenschaften sowie der Staatswissenschaften (mit Abschluss als Dr. rer. pol.). 1929 erfolgte seine Habilitation an der Universität Wien. Sein Lebensweg führte ihn an verschiedene Universitäten in London, New York, Chicago, Freiburg sowie Salzburg. Er pflegte Kontakte zu wichtigen Persönlichkeiten wie L. von Mises, M. Friedman, G. Stigler, G. von Haberler, F. Machlup, O. Morgenstern, E. Voegelin, M. Herzfeld und J. W. Jenks. In den Dreißigerjahren wurde Hayek zu einem Hauptkritiker des Sozialismus. Neben einer Fülle von akademischen Auszeichnungen und Ehrungen erhielt Hayek 1974 den Nobelpreis für Wirtschaftswissenschaften. Sein Lebenswerk umfasst 50 Bücher, knapp 30 Broschüren und rund 270 wissenschaftliche Aufsätze sowie Übersetzungen seiner Werke in nahezu 20 Sprachen.
