In a letter to her great-nephew, the eldest child of Robert and Anna Buist, Mabel Edith (Buist) Teutsch wrote: "Dear Mike, Today is my Dad's Robert D. Buist] birthday. He was 87 years old when he passed away. He would have been very interested and happy to know of your great interest in his ancestry..." The ancestry of the Buist family goes back many generations in Scotland; however this is a narrative history of his children. Robert and Anna Buist had nine children although two died at very young ages. They were all raised in Chicago, Illinois and some of the older children traveled with their parents back to Chesterville, Ontario, Canada to visit with their paternal grandparents who were both still living. Again, the eldest child, Mabel, in a letter to her brother Bert wrote: "I can still see Grandma Buist Helen Scott (Hunter) Buist] mopping the kitchen floor, from her rocker, as you know she could not walk or hear... We all had to talk into the horn. We kids did not get much of a chance to use it, as we were quite afraid of her." These are the stories and biographies of good, decent, honest, hard-working and at times humorous relatives. They were very close to one another even as they all grew older. Some were very instrumental in my pursuits of their ancestry over these many decades. It is to their memories that this work is lovingly dedicated.
