This book provides a ‘state of the art’ review of the academic study of cricket. It defines the current state of the field and will serve as the springboard for future research and scholarship of the game.

Cricket seeks to explore and chart the various ways in which social scientists have analysed the social significance of the game. The double issue will be international in scope, drawing together scholars from Australia, the Caribbean, England, India, New Zealand, North America and South Africa. An interdisciplinary approach will be taken, drawing together geographers, historians, sociologists, literary critics as well as those in the sub-disciplines of gender studies, media studies and post-colonial studies.

Cricket opens with by a brief introductory statement  by the editors which introduces the reader to the main developmental dynamics of the game, provides an overview of research in the field, and sets an agenda for its future development. This is then followed by several insightful chapters divided across five sections. These five sections include:

  • History and Diffusion
  • Politics and Policy
  • People and Personalities
  • Playing Matters
  • Commercialization and Globalization.

By drawing on such diverse perspectives, Cricket will prove to be the essential reader in cricket studies.

This book was published as a special issue of Sport in Society.
