Born in Bosnia, Ivo Andric (1892-1975) was a distinguished diplomat and novelist. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1961. His books include The Damned Yard: And Other Stories, and The Days of the Consuls.

Ivo Andric, geb. 1892 in Travnik/Bosnien, gestorben 1975 in Belgrad gestorben, studierte Slawistik und Geschichte in Zagreb, Wien, Krakau und Graz, wo er auch promovierte. 1921 trat er in den diplomatischen Dienst ein. Er vertrat sein Land in Rom, Bukarest, Triest, Genua, Madrid und Berlin. 1939 war er jugoslawischer Botschafter in Berlin. Im Ersten Weltkrieg saß er wegen seiner politischen Tätigkeit in einem österreichischen Gefängnis, im Zweiten Weltkrieg haben ihn die Deutschen interniert. Seine berühmten Romane "Wesire und Konsuln" (I945) und "Die Brücke über die Drina" (I945) schrieb er während seiner Internierung im Zweiten Weltkrieg.
In Belgrad arbeitete er später zurückgezogen an seinen großen Romanen. 1961 erhielt er den Nobelpreis für Literatur.
