Alice Miller studierte in Basel Philosophie, Psychologie und Soziologie. Nach der Promotion machte sie in Zürich ihre Ausbildung zur Psychoanalyse und übte so Jahre lang diesen Beruf aus. 1980 entschloss sie sich, ihre Praxis und Lehrtätigkeit aufzugeben, um zu schreiben. Seitdem veröffentlichte sie zahlreiche Bücher, in denen sie die breite Öffentlichkeit mit den Ergebnissen ihrer Kindheitsforschungen, mit den Ursachen und Folgen von Kindesmisshandlungen bekannt machte. Die verborgenen Manipulationen in der Erziehung und Politik aufzudecken war lange das Ziel ihrer Bemühungen. Heute befasst sie sich u.a. mit der Analyse von vereinnahmenden Gruppen. 1986 erhielt sie in New York den "Janusz Korczak-Preis".
