Harris' first of sixteen novels. He states that he began writing it in 1994, and completed it in 2008, when it was published. It is a story that covers about a twenty year span. It opens in Tampa, Florida in the psychiatric offices of Madge Gilley, a specialist in adult sex therapy. Madge is in her mid thirties and is published and well respected among her peers. Seated in front of her is fifty-three year old Larry Hampton, who appears to be more interested in dating Madge, than getting therapy for his so-called sex addiction. Madge is frustrated with Larry's evasiveness. So much so that she cuts the session short - hoping to discourage him from returning. She's seen plenty of his type and his type makes her sick to her stomach. That night, Madge struggles in her sleep and is awakened in a paralyzed state. Needless to say, she panics at not being able to breathe. Then she hears a voice. A deep baritone voice. Not the soothing kind. The kind that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand erect. She thinks she's losing her mind, until the voice introduces himself as Azar, a Malek, sent from God, to help her with Larry Hampton and to help her overcome a psychological block, her deepest secret, which she's held since childhood. The angel convinces her to assist Hampton, albeit reluctantly. Azar explains to her: "by helping him, you will be healed of your past." After her unenthusiastic agreement, she drifts off into an invisible, ubiquitous state, and is taken back in time, to an eight month period, twenty years earlier, in 1977. She's invisibly in a tavern in Minnesota and seated at the bar, is a young looking Larry Hampton, who is flirting with a cocktail server, named Cassie Sullivan. Cassie appears to reject Larry's advances but says something to him, which causes Larry to leave the bar abruptly - staring and smiling at Cassie on exit. Come inside and see if Madge and two amazing women can help Larry Hampton playboy become a worthwhile human being.
