The aim of this book is to investigate the means of creating new techniques for the classical guitar by adapting specific techniques typical of the Anatolian long-necked, plucked folk lute with movable frets known as the ba lama or saz. The means of performance and notation of these new techniques are illustrated comprehensively with the related figures, tables and scores in the thesis. Many exercises, etudes and arrangements have been written to teach and improve these techniques. One of the most significant aspects of contemporary classical music is the search for new timbres, sounds, effects, sonorities and techniques. By following this trend, the possibilities of the standardized classical music instruments have been expanded and extended techniques that can attain new timbres and effects have been created. Within this context, this study will introduce the ba lama and illustrate how its technical possibilities have been developed in the last twenty years through the efforts of performers and academics, and more specifically how a synthesis of these techniques with guitar techniques and styles has been achieved."
