Tanka is part of my reason for living. Writing tanka poems provides me with guideposts; it encourages me to live and work diligently. Tanka expresses my memories of each day in a creative way. In the end, tanka is proof that I am alive, and of how I have lived.Poetry is not a memoir, an essay, or a journal. Furthermore, poetry and non-fiction are different genres of literary work; and tanka poetry does not have to be based on facts. Instead, tanka can convey an author's lingering impressions and emotions. People compare life to an autumn evening. Why is life so lonely? Some say that this loneliness is because we have companions in the flesh but do not have companions of the soul. In this book, I share impressions and emotions that my poems are meant to convey. As for myself, it is this loneliness-an icy loneliness-that makes me continue to write tanka. Though loneliness never fades, writing tanka poetry brings faint joy in knowing that my pain has been expressed. In this way, my tanka poems convey impressions and emotions rather than distinct events.
