The Buriganga River has dramatically been disrupted due to extreme reduction of its water flow and encroachment of the banks and rigorous pollution due to human waste, industrial garbage and solid waste dumping. Many illegal structures and construction works have grown up along the banks making the river narrower and destroying the natural phenomena to flow normally. The sustainable development of the city using this river system has become a great challenge. The continuing water pollution poses serious threat to its inhabitants and the natural environment. The Buriganga River is now almost a dying river and the present condition will be more inferior unless necessary steps are taken immediately. Unfortunately there is no distinct river basin committee yet, even not for all other rivers in Bangladesh. No IWRM implementation policy is practised in the country. An integrated river basin organization is highly necessary to implement IWRM approach to save the river. This book provides a consistent and effective framework of River Basin Organization and promote a systematic sustainable river basin management.
