The design and display of 3D models on a computerscreen is usually interleavedby a series of data manipulations. Data are usuallysets of 3D points that make uppolygonal patches in the composition of polyhedralmodels. Manipulations are thetransformation operations that are applied to pointsto facilitate design and visual understandingof the graphical models. To further facilitate thevisual understanding ofthe displayed models for applications such as thefield of anatomy, or speed up thedesign phase for applications such as rapidprototyping, methods are proposed to interactivelyquery data points for shape-control, segment portionsof displayed surfacesfor independent modification, modify and re-integratethe modified segments to themain structure, thereby limiting the number ofpolygons that need to be manipulatedfor computationally cheaper and faster results. This book illustrates how polyhedral surfaces can beorganized into special datastructures to facilitate rapid selection of groups ofdata points, and provides severalalgorithms to facilitate the applications ofinteractive operations on such selected data.
