Pears are the most imported fruit in Brazil. The main factors responsible for this scenario are low productivity, long juvenile period, lack of adapted cultivars and rootstocks, and excessive vegetative growth under the country's conditions. Control of vegetative growth is necessary to prevent excessive growth of branches inside the canopy, in order to reduce shading and increase solar radiation interception, improving fruit quality and flower bud formation. In addition, excessive vegetative growth increases pruning management costs. Thus, to obtain satisfactory yields with quality fruit, there must be a balance between vegetative and reproductive growth, especially in vigorous cultivars and rootstocks. This work presents important considerations and results on the management of vegetative growth in pear trees, which will certainly help to promote this crop in the country, so that in the near future we will be less dependent on imports to supply the domestic market. The book is aimed at professionals in the field, students, researchers, and other interested parties.
