Conventional approaches for urban stormwater management have contributed to the seriousenvironmental degradation of our watersheds in theform of water pollution, habitat destruction, anddecreased ground water recharge. Alternative designstrategies such as incorporating drainage swalesalong residential streets have the potential toreduce such impacts, and are beginning to beimplemented in North America. However, the publicprocess involved in the planning of these projectshas been time-consuming and little research has beenconducted into the visual preferences associated withthese novel streetscape designs. To explore factorsthat may influence visual preference, members ofvarious neighbourhood organizations were surveyedregarding their visual preference for eight differentboulevard designs. By identifying specific landscapeelements and demographic factors that increase visualpreference, the results of this study could provideimportant insight for professionals involved in thedesign and implementation of alternative stormwatermanagement projects.
