Total body irradiation (TBI) is a technique used in combination with chemotherapy prior to bone marrow transplant. Since there was an upgrade in the delivery of the regimen, it is necessary to create a standard operating procedure (SOP) that would include every discipline that is taking part in conducting the treatment. In order to optimize the procedure, it is necessary to understand for what do we use it for, when and how is it implemented, theoretically acquire knowledge, observe and gain practical experience. Duties need to be assigned, starting from the indication of radiation oncologists, immobilization and imaging, positioning and verification for radiation therapists, important parameters physicians have to determine (e. g. dosimetrical considerations). This paper will go through the treatment process and prove the importance of shielding devices in order to optimize and create a user-friendly SOP.
