In equine breeding, a broodmare must produce a viable foal each year to be economically profitable. To achieve this objective, we conducted this study to evaluate the reproductive performance of mares and stallions in the West Algerian region during the 2020 breeding season. A sample of 103 mares (30 from the Chaouchaoua mare farm in Tiaret and 73 from the Haras Hocine el Mansour in Mostaganem) with an average age ranging from 03 to 21 years and of different breeds. They were subjected to ultrasound scanning to monitor follicle growth. Ultrasound results showed that month of service had a highly significant effect on preovulatory follicle diameter, in contrast to age and breed in Tiaret (P<0.05). We also noted that there was a difference between Selle Français and Pur-sang Arabe for the duration of first fertilizing insemination in Mostaganem (P<0.05). We conclude that the fertility of our equine herds in western Algeria is very high, whatever the breeding method used.
