Stahl und Strahl sind, trotz aller Fortschritte auf dem Gebiet der Biologie und der pharmakologischen und hormonalen BeeinGBPlussung bosartiger Geschwiilste, immer noch die HauptwaGBPGBPen im Bemiihen, maligne Erkrankungen zu beherrschen. Die wesentlichen Verbesserungen der Heilungsquoten beruhen auf dem systematischen Ausbau beider Methoden, die sowohl biologische Erkenntnisse als auch selbstverstandlich medikamentose Moglichkeiten sinngemaB zu beriicksichtigen haben. Der edle Wettstreit zwischen Chirurgie und Strahlenbehandlung hat viel dazu beigetragen, die Leistungsfahigkeit beider Vor- gehen klarzustellen und zu steigern und fiihrte schlieBlich zu einer grundlegenden Ande- rung der Strategie. Beide Verfahren, die grundsatzlich lokale BeeinGBPlussungen darstellen, stehen iiberall, wo fortschrittlich gedacht wird, nicht mehr in Konkurrenz zu einander, sondern werden sinnvoll koordiniert. Diese Entwicklungstendenz kann kaum eindriick- licher dargestellt werden als bei der Behandlung maligner Erkrankungen des weiblichen Genitaltrakts. Bei den Erkrankungen der mannlichen Geschlechtsorgane ist der Weg ein ahnlicher, wennauch etwas weniger augenfallig. Bei den Geschwiilsten der Nieren und abfiihrenden Harnwege ist das therapeutische Vorgehen in voller Entwicklung. Noch sind langst nicht aIle Moglichkeiten der Kombination und Assoziation erschOpft. Man hort oft kritische AuBerungen iiber den Wert von Handbuchdarstellungen, zumal durch die gelegentlich nicht zu vermeidenden Verzogerungen der Drucklegung die Dar- stellungen bei der sehr raschen Entwicklung manchmal nicht mehr ganz dem neuesten Stand entsprechen. Der Ausbau beider Methoden und die Verbesserung von fiir gut befundenen Behandlungen erfolgt meistens schrittweise, wobei es von groBem Vorteil ist, wenn auf friiheren Erfahrungen aufgebaut werden kann.
