In the last few years, much has been written on thework of Lars von Trier, though the majority of thesetexts are built around matters of aesthetic andauteurist interest. What is lacking in theseinvestigations, however, is an articulation of thefilms sonic properties, sado-masochistic structures, and affective potentialities.Sound Affects seeks a greater understanding of thesefacets of von Triers films, moving beyond moretraditional ocular-centric modes of investigation tofocus its analysis on the soundtrack, ormise-en-bande. Constructing its methodology fromconcepts originating in the writings of FrenchPhilosopher Gilles Deleuze - The Movement-Image andThe Time-Image, in particular - Sound Affectsapproaches von Triers films through the prism of anew theoretical model, one that imagines the cinemaas composed of two complementary sound-image texts:one sadistic, and the other masochistic. And in theinterval between these two unique space-times, inthose fleeting moments between feeling and thought,is where we locate the affective potential of thetext, an experience that is unique to von Triersfilms, and is felt most profoundly in the realm of sound.
