Agriculture plays a vital role in India's economy 54.6 per cent of the total workforce was engaged in agricultural and allied sector activities (Census 2011). Number of operational holdings in the country was estimated at 14.64 Crore. The small and marginal holdings taken together (0.00-2.00 ha) constituted 86.08 per cent of the total land holdings in 2015-16. The all India average size of holding was 1.08 ha. (Agriculture Census, 2015-16). Cropping Intensity for 2015-16 season has been estimated at 141.25 per cent (DES). In 2020-21 demand for cereals and domestic production was projected by Niti Aayog that was 244.89 and 273.50 million tonnes respectively (Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare 2019-20).Advance estimates of 2021-22 suggest that GDP will record an expansion of 9.2 per cent. Agriculture sector is estimated to grow 3.9 per cent in 2021-22 on top of 3.6 per cent and 4.3 per cent, respectively in the previous two years. Agriculture sector accounts for 18.8 per cent of GVA in 2021-22 that was 20.2 per cent in 2020-21 and 743 lakh hectare area were sown under food grains in 2020-21.
