The ubiquitous computing (ubicomp) area, sometimescalled pervasive computing, presupposes a strongintegration with the real world, with focus on theuser and on keeping high transparency. For the development of applications in this scenario, weneed an adequate software infrastructure. This book, therefore, presents an infrastructure based onService-Oriented Architecture (SOA), making use of framework and middleware. The specific focus iscontext awareness: the perception of characteristicsrelated to users and surroundings. We keep a historyof context using ontology. In this way, context isrepresented in a considerably expressive, formal approach, different from many solutions that existtoday. Our work is then at the intersection of thesethree main areas: software infrastructures forubicomp, context awareness, and ontologies. In the book, we also survey the field of ubiquitouscomputing, suggesting a general architectural modelto deal with its fundamental challenges. This book isintended for professionals in the computer sciencearea, particularly developers, designers, andresearchers that want to know more about the noveland innovative field of ubicomp.
