This work is based on immediate events leading up to and during the socio-political crisis that took place in Jakarta, Indonesia in May 1998. The 1998 Asian economic crisis brought to a head the frustrations of the general population with the corrupt and oppressive regime of President Suharto and the ruling Golkar Party. It focuses on the actions that should be considered and prepared for by management, employees and dependents to ensure their own safety as in-country embassies, consulates or representatives are limited in what they can do help in the event of a sudden collapse in law and order. Immediate post evacuation also needs to be considered by the Company for receiving people at the point of safety overseas. Additional planning must also consider the welfare of local staff who will not be evacuated. They still need to be paid. The decision to evacuate must not be taken lightly. The Company's reputation with its expatriate staff, local staff and host government on the Company's return will be impacted to a degree. The level and type of impact will largely depend on how well the Company planned, managed and catered for the evacuation and subsequent business continuity.
