Based on contributions to the European Group for the Study of Deviance and Social Control's first Sites of Confinement conference, this edited collection of short essays highlights a number of significant areas of contestation including hyper-incarceration, institutional harms in detention, and gendered geographies of punishment. Written by academics and activists working in the fields of penology, incarceration and immigration detention, each chapter gives an overview of some of the most problematic issues in these areas. In looking at the neoliberal prison and wider social control agendas, contributions range from philosophical and conceptual concerns through to synopses of research findings and case studies. Importantly, the overall text considers examples of survival and resistance, offering recommendations for change based on the aims of the Working Group for Prisons, Punishment and Detention.
