Alternate history steampunk with a Japanese flavor. Imagine the Victorians had rediscovered spaceflight. Would the British really be interested in the small island of Japan during the Meiji era on Earth when they could instead occupy an entire Japanese planet instead? Sumiko's ancestors came from Earth to the planet Aynu-Mosir during the first era of spaceflight. After thousands of years of peace, her planet is in danger. First it's the Victorian surveyors who come, then it is the terraforming machines that change her planet's terrain and climate. It's no wonder her tribe shuns her best friend, Faith Earnshaw, and labels her as a "gaijin" or outsider. On Aynu-Mosir, being an off-worlder can mean death. Sumiko must convince her people to accept the help of off-worlders like Faith, and adapt in order to survive disease and technology. No easy task considering the way her people have an uncompromising dislike for change. There are consequences for breaking traditions. Sumiko must decide if she is willing to break rules and risk becoming an outsider herself in order to save her friend. If she is successful, it isn't just Faith's life she saves, but her people's. If she fails, it might mean death for them all.
