It's no wonder her tribe shuns her best friend, Faith Earnshaw, and labels her as a "gaijin" or outsider. On Aynu-Mosir, being an off-worlder can mean death. Sumiko must convince her people to accept the help of off-worlders like Faith, and adapt in order to survive disease and technology. No easy task considering the way her people have an uncompromising dislike for change. There are consequences for breaking traditions. Sumiko must decide if she is willing to break rules and risk becoming an outsider herself in order to save her friend. If she is successful, it isn't just Faith's life she saves, but her people's. If she fails, it might mean death for them all.
