This love lost and found and historical novel begins with a current day vehicle accident on a Mississippi highway. The vehicle chasing an elderly couple, Thornton and Melissa, careens over a bridge leaving two of the three occupants dead. While aiding the survivor, Thornton is puzzled by the survivor's incoherent comments and wonders if his life is in danger, and what relationship a little girl has with the survivor's family and his family. The story reveals that relationship began from a tragic event at the end of the Civil War. Set in the South, many scenes are alive depicting hardships, relationships, and subsistence survival for rural citizens struggling to survive after the war. Scenes include realistic descriptions of the Mississippi River, cotton farming, travel difficulties, and daily survival between conflicting cultures. Although a work of fiction, problems described were reality for many real people at that time, and for the next fifty years.
