Microgrids play a key role in the deployment of smart grids by providing means for integration of renewable sources in the electrical grid. Furthermore, they aid in reducing carbon footprint as well as lessening the load on utility. To leverage increasing deployment of renewable sources and to incorporate growing optimization efforts, the nodes participating in the microgrid need to become "smarter". The microgrid requires an effective communication network, both within a microgrid and between microgrids, for the exchange of information and effective use of renewable sources. It also requires self-organizing capabilities to overcome faults, power outages and to facilitate in effective distribution of electricity. This research investigates and evaluates wireless communication network protocols and network design for intra-microgrid as well as inter-microgrid communication. The work also explores self-organizing grid algorithm that optimizes a group of microgrids with minimal amount of information exchange.
