A parametric analysis of typical base isolatedbridges was conducted. The bridges were located indifferent soil types and were subjected to differentearthquakes. The work had two main objectives: toasses the effects of the nonlinear behavior of theisolation pads of the bridges on the seismicresponses (accelerations, displacements, andpier seismic forces), and to study combined effectsof base isolation and inertial interaction due to thepresence of flexible foundations. The analytical models used for the study wereselected on the basis of initial evaluation ofdifferent models proposed in the literature torepresent a bridge structure and to evaluate theisolation pads nonlinear behavior. The results of the work show the efficiency of baseisolation pads in improving the seismic performanceof bridges in most cases. They suggest that theinertial SSI effects will not be generally importantfor bridge foundations designed with a factor ofsafety of 3, with more than one line of piles ineither direction, but for slender piers it isimportant to carefully evaluate the translations ontop of the piers due to the rocking effects of thefoundation.
