Although access to university has been widened in the form of Foundation programmes to cater for disadvantaged students, this does not necessarily translate to successful completion of their degrees. In addition to their academic under-preparedness, there are ongoing socioeconomic factors which hamper academic progress for these students. This book provides insight into some of these factors; how they may impact on academic achievement during their Foundation year and throughout their tertiary studies. This information is useful for any university programme that offers Foundation programmes or caters for disadvantaged students, as it recommends ways of identifying the at risk factors to help monitor students performance. The book further advocates for ways to promote the protective factors in order to improve their success rates.

Bulelwa Keke: Studied BSc (Biology) and a Masters degree in Science Education. She is currently studying towards a PhD in Science Education at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Bulelwa is lecturing at the Centre for Science Access and the School of Life Sciences also at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
