School bus routing and scheduling are among the majorproblems because school bus transportation needs tobe safe, reliable and efficient. Hence, the researchquestion for this thesis is to answer how totransport students in the safest, most economical andconvenient manner. The objective of this thesis is tocreate a GIS based school transport management systemwhich helps in bus-stop allocation, design fastestand safest bus routes with AVL facility. This thesisalso aims to investigate how a school transportationmanagement system may improve the transportationsecurity. This prototype model will help the schooltransportation management to design shortest andfastest school bus routes and they can also allocatebus stops, which will help them in selecting thepick-up stops for the students and staff, accordingto their concentration in the areas. This thesis hasalso, through literature study, investigated how aschool transport management system can improve thetransportation security. For the time being, there isa general belief that ICT contributes to improvingthe security, although a quantification of suchimprovements are lacking.
