Sarah The Caterpillar Integrated Reading Program Sarah The Caterpillar is an integrated learn to read program for children at the grade one level, easily used by parent, teacher and child. The program is composed of 40 stories and 40 lessons divided into four volumes of ten lessons each, with a total of a 250 words and derived words vocabulary. A principle feature of the program is that the vocabulary in the Reading Book is limited to only those words that appear in a particular story and any preceding stories. The program integration is seen in that the vocabulary appearing in the Reading Book stories is the same as that used in the Workbook exercises. Progress is built on sight recognition, repetition and predictable sentences in the Reading Book stories, and then phonemic recognition learned in the matching Workbook exercises, which are based on the same vocabulary as seen in the Reading Book. The Reading Book stories and Workbook lessons are designed to be short, simple and direct so as to promote success keeping in mind a child's possible struggles. This program is suitable for use by all children and particularly for those who have encountered difficulties learning to read due problems in maintaining focus, remembering letters and their sounds, letter groups, words, and differentiating phonemes. The Key Word Book is a third integral part of the program. Each Key Word has a highlighted phoneme and an accompanying image, serving as a visual cue to assist the child to recall the sounds of vowels and of phoneme groups composed of several letters. The Key Words are printed in two sizes: the smaller size can be used in front of the child as she reads and the larger size can be put on the wall as a memory aid during a lesson and a gentle reminder throughout the day. The black and white layout was chosen as an aid to reduce distraction and to help the child stay focused. This format is preferable when using transparent colour film over the pages as is done sometimes in the case of dyslexia. The program is available in both English and French.
