Sleep is an active state of unconsciousness produced by the body where the brain is in relative state of rest. Sleep has important roles in controlling the functions of many other body systems which is why sleep deprivation results in poor general and oral health. Various studies have shown association between sleep and periodontitis, which is an inflammatory disease of the supporting tissues of the teeth caused by specific group of microorganisms. The relationship between sleep and periodontitis reveals a profound interplay that demands careful consideration for overall health and well-being. Recent studies have investigated the association between sleep deprivation and periodontitis with conflicting results reporting negative, positive and no associations between sleep duration and periodontitis. Hence, this dissertation attempts in providing an insight in estimation of association between sleep and periodontitis.
