This incisive study charts the history of the Roman province of Britannia from the conquest of the first century AD through its heyday in the fourth century to the end of the Roman administration in the early fifth century. Drawing upon the latest historical and archeological evidence, Malcolm Todd outlines the new developments in law, agriculture, urbanization, coinage, manufacturing industry, and architecture which the Romans instigated in Britain.
Malcolm Todd demonstrates that despite the powerful effects of the Anglo–Saxon settlement, the Roman legacy played a vital part in the development of medieval and modern Britain.
The new third edition includes a rewritten final chapter and updates throughout taking account of recent scholarship.
