Rolf Widere (1902-1996) was an extraordinary scientist and inventor. Whilst still a student of engineering he put forward the principles for a "betatron accelerator" and successfully operated the first "linear accelerator" (linac). In 1943 he patented the principle of "colliding storage rings" and in 1945 he submitted a patent which included a complete theory of the "synchrotron." After the War he began to build betatrons for technical and medical applications at BBC in Swizerland where he developed an interesting "two components theory" on the effects of radiation on living cells. For 20 years he taught accelerator physics at the ETH Zurich. He was the subject of occasional reproaches for having worked for the German Luftwaffe during the War, when he built a betatron in Hamburg. This autobiography includes his reasons, and his statements should provide valuable historic insights.

Pedro Waloschek ist 1929 in Dresden (als Österreicher) geboren, hat 1954 an der Universität Buenos Aires in Physik promoviert und war seitdem auf dem Gebiet der Teilchenphysik tätig, erst am MPI-Göttingen, dann in der Schweiz und 11 Jahre in Italien, wo er an den Universitäten Bologna und Bari unterrichtet hat und habilitiert wurde. Von 1968 bis 1994 war er einer der "leitenden Wissenschaftler" am Forschungszentrum DESY in Hamburg. Waloschek ist Autor oder Koautor von etwa 100 wissenschaftlichen Veröffentlichungen. Seit 1978 beschäftigt er sich zunehmend mit der möglichst verständlichen Darstellung seines Faches, insbesondere für den Schulunterricht (8 Bücher, darunter das "dtv Wörterbuch Physik" und viele Veranstaltungen). 1999 wäre sein Vater, der Architekt Hans Waloschek 100 Jahre alt geworden. Pedro Waloschek hat mit seiner Schwester Jutta deshalb mehrere Veröffentlichungen über sein Leben und sein Werk verfasst.
