Hyaluronic acid, for decades, was considered to be only a structural component of the extracellular matrix of skin, joints, eye and many other tissues of our body, but nowadays it has a widespread use in the field of medicine and regenerative periodontics. Being a natural component of our body and found abundantly in the periodontal tissue, it can be used in humans without causing an immune or inflammatory response. It has various properties which permit it to act like a barrier against periodontal pathogens and make it practical to use in the form of a gel, allowing an easy application. It has a proangiogenic, anti-inflammatory, tissue healing and bacteriostatic role which influence positively the periodontal inflammation and healing when used alone or used as an adjunct to surgical or non-surgical periodontal therapy. Preliminary evidence suggests that hyaluronan may be a potential candidate as a mediator of non-mineralized periodontal tissue healing and as an aid to periodontal disease treatment.
