The textbook Rock: Postmodernism in Action features research that examines the impact of rock music as an art form and its ongoing effect on society and culture. It introduces readers to the defining features and historical development of rock, and then explores rock and its subgenres from the 1960s through the 1990s.
Students learn about the particular flavors of the music of each decade, as well as its central artists and events. They explore the emotional power and cultural relevance of specific lyrics and review charts that enhance their understanding of form and sectional relationships. Additional charts map out common rock rhythms.
With an accompanying active learning component and curated playlist, the book gives non-music majors insight into the world of rock music while also providing meaningful content for music majors seeking a deeper appreciation of this musical form. Rock: Postmodernism in Action is well-suited to courses on American culture and popular music. It can also serve as a supplemental text in classes on the philosophy of music or cultural studies.Lifelong musician Michael Barnett holds the doctor of musical arts degree in music composition from the University of Colorado, Boulder.
