His network of followers increases when he is chosen to lead a gang of Parisian thieves. Among them is the young Marmouset, who becomes Rocambole's protege. Rocambole converts the thieves into a patriotic force fighting a new menace-the Stranglers--that has invaded Europe from India. Rocambole runs into Baccarat again in one of his adventures, convinces her that he has redeemed himself, and solicits her help. Baccarat sees a nobility and unselfishness in the new Rocambole, join forces with him, and becomes his lifelong friend. Volume 2 takes Rocambole beyond Paris and London. His adventures take him to Italy, Russia, and India.
