This book opens up a new way of thinking about how prejudice against the individual in social systems is accepted in political discourse to cast blame on -others-. It helps us to understand the current resurgence of social prejudice against ethnic minority groups, the logics of scapegoating and the resulting violence. Hypocrisy and double standards are inherent in our social practices, thus this study takes account of conflicts between theory and practice, layers of implicit- and explicitness, pre- and unconscious experience and the power differentials that shape these constellations. The book develops a psychoanalytic understanding of alterity, revealing why the use of prejudice is valuable to social forces that wish to project unwanted qualities into devalued others, be it foreigners, refugees, blacks, Jews or Muslims, accounting for the present rise of prejudice in European society.
