Reproductively Active Chemicals A Reference Guide Richard J. Lewis, Sr. Adverse effects on the human reproductive system due to chemical exposure are a growing concern of occupational safety and health professionals. While the effects of certain chemicals can be difficult to detect, and often go unnoticed or are mistakenly attributed to other causes, they can drastically increase risks of infertility, sterility, birth defects, and post-birth complications. Written by one of the foremost authorities in the field today, Reproductively Active Chemicals is the first book to identify, compile, and fully document the effects of more than 3,300 chemical substances known or suspected to cause adverse effects on human reproductive health. This major reference work features:

  • Cross-indexes by synonym and identification number
  • Vital information drawn from authoritative sources on hazardous chemicals, including chemical properties, toxicity, and synonyms
  • Toxic effects indicating reported dominant reproductive effects
The list of reproductively active materials covered here includes drugs, food additives, preservatives, ores, pesticides, dyes, and many other classes of materials. Some of the information also refers to materials of undefined composition. For each entry, the author provides the "DPIM" number, entry name, CAS number, molecular formula, molecular weight, a description of the material, and physical properties. He specifies effects on the male and female reproductive systems, mating success, fetal effects including abortion and transplacental carcinogenesis, and post-birth effects. Each reproductive or teratogenic effect reported includes the dose and species exposed, a brief characterization of the exposure conditions, and a reference to the source of the data. Human effects are presented separately from animal data to highlight the data's importance. With its broad range of crucial, up-to-date information, Reproductively Active Chemicals is an essential sourcebook for professionals in industrial health and safety and related areas. It offers vital information for protecting current and future generations from the dangers of chemical exposure, and will be especially helpful to industrial hygienists and toxicologists, safety and risk managers, loss prevention personnel, and industrial insurers.

Richard J. Lewis, Sr. is a chemist with over twenty years of experience in air and industrial pollution measurements, industrial hygiene research, and toxicological and chemical information systems. He served as Manager of Information Services for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Mr. Lewis co–authored several major works with Irving Sax, including Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials, Seventh Edition. His most recent books include Food Additives Handbook, Rapid Guide to Hazardous Chemicals in the Workplace, Second Edition, Carcinogenically Active Chemicals, and Hazardous Chemicals Desk Reference, Second Edition.

Books of Related Interest From Van Nostrand Reinhold
Carcinogenically Active Chemicals A Reference Guide By Richard J. Lewis, Sr., 1088 pages, 7 × 10, ISBN 0–442–31875–8
More than 3400 chemicals verified or suspected as carcinogens are listed in this massive sourcebook. Data on each chemical are drawn from leading cancer research and regulatory agencies, and based on animal experiments, human case histories, or conclusions of expert review groups. Each entry contains experimental data relating to the carcinogenicity or mutagenicity of the entry with literature citations, and includes the conclusions of IARC, OSHA, ACGIH, DFG MAK, and NIOSH. Indexes are provided on human tumor sites, synonyms, CAS numbers, and a complete reference list is included.

Hazardous Chemicals Desk Reference Second Edition By Richard J. Lewis, Sr., 1100 pages, 7 × 10, ISBN 0–442–00497–4
This complete update and revision of the renowned First Edition provides immediate access to vital information on approximately 5000 hazardous chemicals and compounds commonly used in industry, manufacturing, laboratories, and the workplace. Entries feature a concise review of toxicity and other hazards, including a helpful 1–to–3 hazard rating, important reference information such as chemical synonyms and CAS, NIOSH, and DOT number identifiers, standards for exposure limits, and general physical properties. The toxic and hazard review paragraph for each entry offers a detailed analysis of poisonous, irritant, corrosive, explosive, and carcinogenic properties. The entries provide a reliable guide to a full spectrum of short term and chronic human health effects associated with improper handling and exposure to these chemicals.

Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials Seventh Edition By N. Irving Sax and Richard J. Lewis, Sr., 4283 pages, 3 volumes, 8 1/2 × 11, ISBN 0–442–28020–3
This classic reference has been thoroughly revised and updated. It now provides more than 20,000 chemical entries, as compared to 18,000 entries offered in the Sixth Edition. Every entry has been reviewed and brought up–to–date, with physical properties checked, clinical data reviewed, synonyms added, and cross–references to the latest issues of Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials Report included. Exposure standards have also been revised and expanded to include OSHA PELS, ACGIH Threshold Limit Values, Short– Term Exposure Limits, Biological Exposure Indices, and Maximum Allowable Concentrations (from the German Research Institute).

Food Additives Handbook By Richard J. Lewis, Sr., 600 pages, 6 7/8 × 10, ISBN 0–442–20508–2
More than 1350 food additives, including direct and indirect additives, packaging materials, and pesticide residue, are covered in this handbook. Wide–ranging information on each additive includes physical properties, generic use, foods where used, hazards to the consumer and worker who handles large quantities and usage regulations. Key data are provided on unintentional additionals.
