In the early twenty-first century, however, there is clear resurgence of political interest from various religious entities. This has been especially noticeable in the post-cold war era among the so-called ‘world religions’ in all regions of the world.

In recent years, scholars have identified a range of religious actors with a variety of political goals. This book examines political activities of selected religious actors in Christian, Muslim and Judaist contexts, in Europe and the Middle East. The basic premise is that such actors – including Islamist groups, the Roman Catholic and the Orthodox churches – pose various challenges for citizenship, democracy, and secularisation in these regions in both Europe and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). The key question on which the book focuses is: Why, how and when do religious actors seek to influence political outcomes in relation to citizenship, secularisation and democracy in Europe and the Middle East?

Providing a survey of what is happening in relation to the interaction of religion and politics, both domestically and internationally, in relation to a variety of issues, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of politics, religion, European and Middle East studies.
