This book looks beyond the nation state and institutions to examine regional cooperation of the Nordic countries in international organizations.
Traditional studies on international relations and international history typically revolve around either of two objects: nation states or international organizations. These different foci have a theoretical foundation in the approaches of power-political so-called realism/neorealism, on the one hand, and idealism, institutionalism or liberalism with a functionalist perspective and interest in international law, on the other.
This book looks beyond the nation state and institutions to examine regional cooperation of the Nordic countries in international organizations. It promotes a more complex picture of the international system by shedding light on the politics of alignment and distinct macro-regional identity-building in international arenas. It partakes in the discussion on globalisation and breaks this phenomenon down to the level of practical politics and strategic alliances. The historical perspective allows for tracing overall developments in multilateral diplomacy. This volume provides for parallel analysis of a variety of international contexts: all-purpose organizations, special agencies, European institutions, international NGO networking. This wide-reaching analysis generates a diverse picture of the prospects and limits of transnational alignment in international arenas, and engages in the current discussions about shifting parameters for regional cooperation in Northern Europe and the Baltic Sea Region.
This book will be of interest to students and scholars of regionalism, Nordic studies, European Studies, international organizations, international relations and Transnationalism.
