These struggles allow Dan to understand that he had never been abandoned by God. His faith is restored after he learns that sacrificial love was behind Maureen's decision to break off their engagement. And he finds redemption in the knowledge that it was God who led his congregation to dismantle the bridge and destroy the evil it represented.
