This text aims to extend educational literacy, that is, the ability of teachers to deconstruct policy, research and media texts and place them within historical, social and literacy contexts of student teachers on PGCE courses. It examines in turn the four message systems through which educational meanings are conveyed in modern society: official policy texts; written media; spoken media and spoken texts. This should therefore help teachers to develop reading strategies appropriate for deconstructing the texts they are confronted with in order to become more critical, reflective and effective teachers.
