This research uses Vygotsky s sociocultural theoryand Halliday s systemic function linguistics toexplore raising awareness ofstrategy use on second language learners reportedstrategy use and oral language production. The study involves twogroups of advanced adult ESL learners. Theexperimental group members received a strategy use awareness-raising session andengaged in task-specific reflection about theirstrategy use immediately after their weekly speakingactivities. The comparison group members did notreceive a strategy use awareness-raising session, butengaged in freewheeling reflection immediately aftertheir identical weekly speaking activities. Researchfindings from the quantitative and qualitative datashed light on the efficacy ofheightening learners awareness of strategy usethrough in-class awareness-raising sessions andpost-speaking activity strategy-specific reflection. In pedagogical terms, the findings offer instructorsimportant information about language learners'strategic behaviours and about how language-learningclassrooms can incorporate reflective practice thatenables learners to develop a metacognitive awarenessof their ongoing learning.
