Periodontics is the branch of dentistry devoted for the treatment of the supporting structures of the teeth and their replacements.Periodontal diseases are prevalent human diseases defined by gingival inflammation and periodontal tissue destruction. The foundation of our knowledge of periodontal disease is not the product of linear events,but rather a bringing together of theories, discoveries, and advances that have occurred in parallel. It is well document that scientists and clinicians have been trying to understand and treat the periodontal disease for centuries.Currently, no single diagnostic approach can be used to provide enough information for the clinician to make a diagnosis that would necessarily be different. from one derived from clinical assessment.Similarly, treatment decisions, apart from the need for adjunctive anti bacterial therapy or perhaps matrix metallo proteinases regulation are not necessarily influenced by currently available testing methods.Conventional and advanced imaging systems have proven a boon for diagnosis in periodontology. Further advancements are also expected in near future.
