Das Bild der rasenden Furien als Topos durchzieht seit Jahrtausenden die Gedanken- und Bilderwelt der Menschheit und inspirierte und faszinierte unzählige Künstler:innen. Dieser Vorstellung zugrunde liegt auch ein emotionaler Hintergrund, ein heftiger, unbeherrschter Gefühlsausbruch, eine Wut (lateinisch: Furor, im Sinne von Raserei, Leidenschaft und Wahnsinn, französisch: Rage). Die daraus resultierende Affekthandlung wird als Raserei oder Wüten bezeichnet, kombiniert mit einem Gemütszustand unkontrol-lierter Erregung im Sinne eines Außer-sich- oder Von-Sinnen-Seins.Die Personifizierung dieser Affekte wurde in der griechischen und römischen Mythologie mit dem Trio der Rachegöttinen, den Erinnyen (lat. furia) bezeichnet namens: Alekto (Die Unaufhörliche, die niemals Rastende), Megaira (deutsch Megäre, der neidische Zorn) und Tisiphone (Die Vergeltung, die den Mord rächt, dargestellt mit Hundekopf und Fleder-mausschwingen), sowie eine weitere, die von Nemesis (die ausgleichende Gerechtigkeit).Bereits in der Antike wurden sie in Skulpturen dargestellt, auf Münzen geprägt oder als Bilder auf Amphoren verewigt.In sämtliche Epochen der Bildenden Kunst tauchen sie auf, in der Literatur, Musik, Comics und Computerspielen.Mal in weiblicher, männlicher oder androgyner Form, z.B. als Racheengel, oder aber auch als hybrides Wesen zwischen Mensch und Tier. Bilder von Albrecht Dürer, Hieronymus Bosch, Tizian, Peter Paul Rubens, William Hamilton, Johann Heinrich Füssli, Franz von Stuck, Alfred Kubin, Salvador Dali, Francis Bacon, Yongbo Zhao und vielen anderen belegen dies.In der Oper werden sie zum wichtigen Element in höchst dramatischer Szenen, vor allem bei Themen mit mythologischem oder historischem Hintergrund, oft auch mit Bezug zur Unterwelt, so bei Monteverdi (Il Ritorno dÙlisse in Patria), Lully (Armide), Gluck (Orpheus und Euridike) oder Purcell (Dido and Aeneas) oder bei Mozart in der Zauberflöte, in der Arie Der "Hölle Rache" von der "Königin der Nacht".
