PROFIBUS in Practice consists of four parts. Part I covers the installation of PROFIBUS devices and cables. Part II looks at PROFIBUS system engineering, commissioning and maintenance, Part III PROFIBUS system design and Part IV PROFIBUS operation, protocol and applications. This book is Part I of the series and provides the basics of PROFIBUS technology and focuses on how to install PROFIBUS devices and cables. It contains guidelines and good practice in wiring and testing PROFIBUS systems that are shared by many competence centres of PROFIBUS International. It is also a textbook written for the internationally accredited "Certified PROFIBUS Installer Course" which I have been teaching for many years. Fieldbus, and particularly PROFIBUS, provides reliable and cost-effective technology for a wide range of instrumentation and control equipment used in manufacturing, storage, building and process industries. However, fieldbus installation is fundamentally different from other types of electrical installation because it uses high-speed digital communications. When problems are encountered, they are invariably caused by simple errors in layout, cabling or connections. Knowing the guidelines on installing and testing of PROFIBUS devices and cables, such problems can be avoided at the outset, rather than after the installation is complete, when correction may require expensive re-routing or re-wiring. Part I of PROFIBUS in Practice covers the layout, installation and testing of complete PROFIBUS DP and PA networks and makes sure that installation technicians are fully aware of the requirements for successful PROFIBUS installations and highlights how to avoid many common, but potentially costly, pitfalls.
