***THE BOOK FOR ENGLISH TEACHERS WHO NEED TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE*** This book was and still is for teachers of English who require further knowledge about how English is structured and used worldwide in the 21st C. It is a revision of John Miller Dow Meiklejohn's original 1886 edition, newly re-edited for teachers of English worldwide in the same way the original was prepared for novice English teachers in the late 19th C. The book helps with many important tasks, including: - easy-to-understand examples with each new lesson; - definitions provided of new terms with explanations throughout the book at the time they're needed; - excerpts taken from English literature to demonstrate rules of English grammar; - observation of the same patterns of speech shown in other languages which may have been studied; and - more familiarity with English sayings and expressions. Two indexes are provided: one at the start of the lessons on English grammar and one after them. There is also cross-referencing of difficult terms so that students can learn to recognize and remember the terms when they reappear. Teachers become familiar with the "writing process," learning how to guide students to develop clearly written English sentences, paragraphs, essays and reports. The book concludes with fifty pages of meaningful exercises, each of them indexed to the English language lesson from which they originate, so as to allow immediate review . "The English Language: Its Grammar, History and Literature"(1886) was a book which had widespread popularity among newly trained teachers all over the world in the 19th and early 20th C. whose knowledge of English was incomplete. The book reached over thirty-five editions in the British Isles, the British Commonwealth and the United States. It was the preferred text for student teachers for its understated tone and approach to English instruction. I have revised and re-edited the book and, in addition to using it in my own classes and now presenting it on Amazon Books, I have also created a web site to advertise and market it: www.jmdmrevision.com. I hope you find it useful in learning more about one of Britain's early educators - Fraser McKen
