The nature of professional expertise has been widelyexamined, primarily from a dichotomy of perspectives- either from an experiential or a cognitive focus, without the attempt to integrate these, and otheraspects of expertise, into an integrated and coherentmodel. This book is structured in two sections. The firstpart incorporates a philosophical discussion, whichadvances an integrated model of professionalexpertise. The second part uses a case study focusedon the field of medical imaging to illustrate andrefine the model. Findings show that while expertise is situated in thecontext of practice, it incorporates severaldimensions working together through the medium of theindividual practitioner. Expertise synthesises theknowledge base, the cognitive processes, personalityand internal processes of the practitioner. Itmanifests through, and builds on, interpersonalrelationships with clients and other professionals, and is expressed through the actual doing ofprofessional practice. It is through the reflexiveexamination of practice and management of change thatprofessionals may transform these integrated aspectsinto the qualitative state of expertise.
