This book addresses a question how to prepare high quality teachers in the 21st century and how the East and the West can learn from each other? The book addresses the different challenges and dilemma the eastern countries, especially China, and the western countries are facing on teacher preparation. We explore the question by examining teacher education research, practice and policy in different countries. The authors in this book find common problems as well as different challenges. We then try to find valuable experiences, theories and practice which can solve specific problems in the process of teacher preparation. We also address how local and global factors play in teacher education. Meanwhile, we do not completely separate the stage of pre-service teacher preparation from the in-service teachers professional development. We consider that they should be considered in an integral way. Also, we suggest that we cannot ignore the social and cultural contexts in answering this question. Finally, we suggest teachers knowledge and characteristics should be accounted in educating high quality teachers.
