This volume will primarily concern the interdisciplinary observations of earthquake processes, which would have an impact on our further understanding of the physics of earthquakes and the phenomena that precedes their energy release. It expands the existing discussions on earthquake phenomena by presenting the latest progress in studying pre-earthquake processes. Based on interdisciplinary studies it would provide new evidence about possible coupling between our planet's environment with its lithosphere, which provides a better understanding of the physics of earthquake and earthquake cycles. The monograph includes contribution to observations and analyses of seismic, geochemical, electromagnetic, and thermodynamic processes related to stress changes in the lithosphere along with their statistical and physical validation. Plans are to investigate the fluctuations that originate in the ground, atmosphere in ionosphere as a result of increasing strain and stress and rapid coupling changes prior to major earthquakes. Main objectives are to analyze the anomalous in different geophysical fields using latest satellite and in-situ observations. The inter-disciplinary approach addresses the relationship between seismo-mechanical, geochemical, electromagnetic, and thermodynamic phenomena and significant earthquakes.

This monograph will be composed of specific, cutting edge work on particular aspect of pre-earthquake physical processes; as well as of both fundamental and applied interdisciplinary science. Plans are to gather the latest space and ground based observational techniques that are currently being used and developed.

Pre–Earthquake Processes

A Multidisciplinary Approach to Earthquake Prediction Studies

Pre–earthquake signals are advanced warnings of a large seismic event. A better understanding of these processes can help to predict the characteristics of the subsequent mainshock. Pre–Earthquake Processes: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Earthquake Prediction Studies presents the latest research on earthquake forecasting and prediction based on observations and physical models in China, Greece, Italy, France, Japan, Russia, Taiwan, and the United States.

Volume highlights:

  • Describes the earthquake processes and the physical signals that precede them
  • Explores the relationship between pre–earthquake activity and subsequent seismic events
  • Encompasses physical, atmospheric, geochemical, and historical characteristics of pre–earthquakes
  • Illustrates thermal infrared, seismo ionospheric, and other satellite and ground–based pre–earthquake anomalies
  • Applies these multidisciplinary data to earthquake forecasting and prediction

Written for seismologists, geophysicists, geochemists, physical scientists, students and others, Pre–Earthquake Processes: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Earthquake Prediction Studies offers an essential resource for understanding the dynamics of pre–earthquake phenomena from an international and multidisciplinary perspective.
