This volume brings together contemporary plays from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Africa and South Africa, the Caribbean, South East Asia and India - countries which have all experienced Imperialism. Chosen for their response (whether thematic or performative) to imperialism, the plays explore key issues such as gender, race, class, the body, history and ethnicity. The playwrights range from the well-known to the previously unpublished, and a wide range of performance styles are represented, from realism, popular theatre and comedy, to ritual and politics. The book includes a general introduction which outlines the major thematic issues raised by post-colonial plays, and discusses the debates about how a post-colonial field should be constituted. It also introduces students and teachers to ways of thinking about post-colonial drama in terms of performance. Individual introductions to plays include biographical information on the author, an overview of the play's cultural context and major ideas; and an outline of the play's performance history.
