Simulations that are both accurate and detailed canbe costly to implement. As such, we examine thetrade-offs of using virtual environments provided bythe Torque game engine to simulate a real worldseaport, including illicit cargo and the sensorsdesigned to detect such cargo. Specifically, wediscuss the modeling of daily operations and issuesinvolved in simulating a dynamic environment (e.g,ships, cargo containers, cranes, and trucks). Finallywe cover conclusions drawn from using game enginesfor simulation purposes, both advantages and aninvestigation of feasibility concerns. Mostprominently issues include the ability to renderlarge areas and the scalability of developing complexinteractions. Ultimately, this simulation will serveas a testbed for evaluating optimal sensordeployments and the aggregation of multiple sourcesof data for decision making. Issues discussed centeron processes and feasibility, making this of interestto anyone working in alternative simulation design orinterested in the implementation details of our project.
